HIGHER EDUCATION IN TRIPURA

The State Department of Education (Higher) is entrusted with the task of providing opportunities to the students of the state for pursuing higher studies ranging from general education to sports and youth services and also for promotion of art and culture in the state. The state has one State run University and one Private University, 14-General Degree Colleges, 1-College of Teacher Education, 1-Govt. Law College, 1-Engineering College, 1-Polytechnic Institute, 1-Oral Coaching Centre, 1-Tripura Joint Entrance Board. Beside these higher education facilities, 193-NSS Units, 28-NCC Units,1- College of Art & Culture, 1-Govt. Music College, 1-Govt. Museum, 1-State Archives, 24-Public libraries, 1-State Kala Academy and 1-Rabindra Statabarshiki Bhavan.

 Courses offered:

 The colleges for general education run undergraduate courses in Science, Arts and Commerce steams at pass and honours level. In total 26 (twenty six) subjects are offered in under-graduate level in different degree colleges having enrollment of more than 19,000 students. In some colleges a couple of vocational subjects have been started from the session 1996-97.

 In Tripura Engineering College degree level courses in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical & Computer Science Engineering are offered whereas in Polytechnic Institute diploma level courses in the above mentioned branches are offered along with diploma level courses in (i) Electronics and Tele-communications (ii) Computer Science & Technology (iii) Modern Office Procedure and Management (iv) Food Processing Technology (v) Interior decoration, handicrafts and furniture design (vi) Automobile Engineering. Under World Bank assisted Tech. Ed.III Project Women's Polytechnic has been set up in 2003-04 and in the course are Information Technology, Medical Lab. Technology and Fashion Tech. have been introduced.

In Govt. College of Art & Crafts degree courses i.e. Bachelor of Visual Art in 1) Drawing & Printing 2) Applied Art and 3) Sculpture are offered. Moreover there is one-year Certificate course in Decorative Art & Crafts. In Govt. Music College B. Muse courses are offered in Vocal, Instruments and Dance.
