LAKES OF TRIPURA

 

Dumboor Lake

The famous Dumboor lake located about 110 kms away from Agartala, in the midst of picturesque hills of green vegetation is the biggest attraction. The lake has 41 sq.km of water surface with 48 islands within. There is a Hydel Project near the lake from where river Gomati originates and this is called Tirthamukh where on 14th January every year famous 'Poush Sankranti Mela' takes place. The lake is the confluence of rivers Raima and Sarma. Various species of migratory birds are noticed in the winter and it has a rich reservoir of natural and cultured fishes.

Rudrasagar Lake

Rudrasagar lake, about 55 kms away from Agartala near Melaghar having 5.3 sq. km water area is another big attraction. The famous lake palace of Tripura namely Neermahal is built in the center of the lake. The lake witnesses a large number of migratory birds every winter. Every year a boat festival is organized in July/August. Visiting tourists can enjoy boating and water sports facilities in the lake.

Kamala Sagar

Kamalsagar, located at a distance of 27 kms from Agartala was excavated by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 15th century. On the bank of Kamalasagar there is a famous temple of Goddess Kali dating back to 16th century. It is one of the excellent picnic spots in the state.

Khowra

Khowra Lake in Kailashahar Sub-Divsion of North Tripura is similar to Rudrasagar of Melaghar. While Rudrasagar is famous for its Neermahal, Khowra lake is famous for its Shivasthal. The natural beauty of the lake is more attractive. While Neermahal draws nature lovers, this spot draws both the nature lovers and the devotees. Fairs are held twice every year in the courtyard of Shivasthal and people in thousands visit this area to pay their respect to the Shivasthal. There are interesting stories about the desires of the visitors being fulfilled while visiting the area. It has great attraction for both Hindus and Muslims together and is an unique place of communal harmony. The lake being 5 sq. k.m. in area, water sports facilities are available in this lake. This lake being a very peaceful and solitary area anybody going from outside will like this solitude.

Other Lakes

There are huge lakes at Udaipur namely Amarsagar, Kalyansagar, Jagannath Dighi, Mahadeve Dighi and Sukh Sagar which were excavated by the then Maharajas. These lakes add beauty to the Udaipur town which is also known as City of temples and lakes. In addition there are beautiful lakes : Sepahijala Lake in the midst of wild life sanctuary, lakes of different sizes in Trishna wild life Sanctuary, Radha Sagar & Krishna Sagar infront of Ujjayanta palace of Agartala, lakes adjacent to Buddha temple and M. B. B. College, lake at Kumarghat, Kailashahar & Satero Miahar Howar.
