I am happy to note that
the Agartala Press Club is completing 25 years of its inception and
celebrating its Silver Jubilee on 30th January this year.
In a constant, challenging, and ongoing activity towards achieving a
free and responsible press, I appreciate the services rendered by
the Agartala Press Club for past 25 years.
I am also will aware of
the distinctive character of Agartala Press Club as an apex
representative body of the media in Tripura and its glorious role in
upholding the hallowed democratic rights of the fourth pillar of
democracy.
In a democracy the
society makes its own decisions. To make governance decisions well,
the population needs access to information and free exchange of
views. Media play a central role in modeling the public opinion.
Today, with liberalization and globalization and obviously in a
competitive environment the Indian press Industry has got
restructured and changed beyond recognition. We nave moved from
information scarcity to information plenty in a highly competitive
marketplace of ideas. But the greatest responsibility of any press
personnel is not to lose objectivity in what he or she doing. And I
hope during the year long celebration the members of the fourth
estate will certainly deliberate, discuss and explore the issues of
the nation in general and Tripura in particular.
I am extremely sorry
that I could not attend the inaugural function of the yearlong
Silver Jubilee Celebration owing to some prior commitment on that
very day.
Though this time I could
not attend the inaugural programme, I am hopeful that in the coming
days I shall be able to share you joyous moments. I extend my
sincere congratulations and heartfelt greetings to the members of
Agartala Press Club and the democratic people of Tripura.
With best wishes.
