Today, in Tripura, insurgency has not left anyone unaffected. In the so called fight for rights, freedom and sovereignty the insurgent is far from attaining them. The very purpose or ideology of the 'indigenous' people is defeated by an armed struggle.
Our nation is so diverse in terms of geography, culture, life style etc. Yet, if all states ask for freedom and sovereignty just because of bad governance or difference in culture, none can sustain itself. The Constitution of India has granted every citizen of this country the same rights as others irrespective of religion, culture or location. But at the same time he must also think what his contribution is towards his community and nation. A person's rights, be it fundamental or otherwise, are subject to the society in which he is a part of. If a section of the society feels that they are not getting what they deserve, it does not mean they should detach themselves from the society.
Has the insurgent ever stopped for a moment and thought what is his role in building the nation? In the struggle for 'rights', hasn't he forgotten his 'Duties'? To start with, duty towards family, followed by duty towards the community, towards the nation and finally towards entire humanity.
An insurgent who has taken up arms to fight for his rights has failed in all his duties that he is bound to. He has deserted his family to join the insurgent group, thereby depriving his family the support and care he would have been able to provide.
No development of the area will take place when the authorities cannot reach the area due to an environment of fear and threat of death. The insurgent, by not allowing the basic amenities to reach the people and halting development of the area is harming the people for whom he wishes to fight for. The insurgent has failed in his duties towards the community or society he lives by following the flimsy pretext of some leader who himself is living lavishly and in comfort.
The main repercussion of insurgency is not felt just in the present but also in the next generation i.e. the children who cannot avail the basic facility of education which equips them to live a better tommorrow. Today the insurgent may feel proud of creating fear in the heart of the "oppressor", but what he fails to understand is that he has not only harmed the present generation but also the next generation grievously. No matter how just the cause is, an armed rebellion against the state is futile as no one can match the resources of the state.
A person has both Rights and duties. If he is entitled to few rights then he is equally entitled to do certain duties towards family, community, nation and entire humanity. If he is not getting the rights he is entitled to, he cannot absolve himself of the duties he has to perform. Across the world any religion or culture accepts the saying -
"Karmanyeva adhikar aste, maa phaleshu kadachana" - Bhagavad Gita
