INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH
Animesh Debbarma ,
M.L.A. (INPT)
Agartala

A highly qualified and well-placed technocrat joining the humdrum of politics is a rare phenomenon , at least in Tripura . What the toppers at academic level earnestly look for now  is a  safe and lucrative job and the very best things of life that it can afford. To that extent Mr Animesh Debbarma , a  B.Tech in computer science and engineering , who resigned a highly lucrative job in the Indian Oil Corporation , a public sector giant to join the uncertain and slippery field of politics in Tripura is a contrarian . However, Mr Debbarma has so far achieved as much success in politics  as he earlier did in academics  and professional career. Conventional political wisdom of pundits was rudely jolted when Mr Animesh Debbarma  as INPT candidate edged out CPI (M) stalwart and tribal welfare minister Mr Aghore Debbarma from Pramod Nagar seat in the last assembly polls-a constituency known till then as an impregnable Marxist bastion. Having brought a breath of fresh air in Tripura's divisive ethno-centric politics Mr Debbarma proposes to sensitise the socio-economic and political concepts  prevalent  in the state with his original thinking and ideas. In this exclusive interview Mr Debbarma gave an intimate and frank expression to his views and thoughts.

Qus : What prompted you to resign a safe and lucrative job and join the din and bustle politics which in any case is full of uncertainties and risks in Tripura ?

Ans :   Although Tripura is a small state , it is full of resources which are not being properly used for generating employment. Our state is far behind the national standard in almost all the fields ( games & sports, Science & Technology, Agriculture, Health Care etc). I see lot of challenges in these areas. I have resigned  my job and joined politics to lead the people from the front to create opportunities for every one. Moreover, over the last few years the political culture in the state has become  degrading  like anything. Leaders like Late Dasharath Deb, Late Aghore Debbarma, Late Sachindra Lal Singha, Late Biren Datta and Sri.Nripen Chakraborty had a dream of civilized Tripura but present political culture is a big threat for the society since it is being  slowly but steadily gripped  by gundas and jungle raj. I feel participation of more and more educated, young and dynamic politicians will be able to set it right.

Qus : How do you explain your choice of party, INPT which is very regional in its outlook and confined only to a section of the state's people? You could have gone for a national party.

Ans : I always give importance to the causes of my state before anything else.In fact I thought of starting my political career from a particular village because I see the revolution of development has to start from the village level.Since INPT is the only state level political party, which is confined to the state it gives you the opportunity to work for both Adivasis and Bengalis. That is why I had chosen INPT.

Qus : Your maiden electoral contest proved to be very successful as  you emerged from the fray as a giant killer by humbling senior CPI (M) leader and minister Mr Aghore Debbarma in an apparently safe seat. How did that happen and what contributions can you make to politics and people in Tripura?

Ans : I come from a middle class family from a village called Tulashikar under Promode Nagar Assembly Constituency. I had gone through all the phases of farmer’s family during my boyhood. This is the reason why  people could not look upon  me separately from them. When I started campaigning, people identified me as one of them. Whereas Shri Aghore Debbarma was always holding chair right from the beginning of his political carrer. He has no public touch other than govt power.Even today,he can serve the people of Pramode Nagar as a Vice Chairman of the planning board of the state.People have got so many problems there (Road,Drinking water, education , basic health care) which the government can take care of.I feel that his small help in this regard would have solved most of the problems. But he is totally silent on people’s problem. So,my election victory is basically because of the fact that people have lost their confidence in  left front govt.through Shri .Aghore Debbarma. Moreover, I am a local man of Pramode Nagar constituency unlike Shri .Aghore Debbarma who has been imported from another assembly constituency.
I would like to see total democracy in Tripura politics where people can talk freely, where there is no mafiaism in politics and where all the parties can peacefully coexist.  Of course there must be  more space for educated people in politics.

Qus : During the past two decades Tripura has been pulverised by a succession of insurgencies , the sheer human cost of which has been colossal . How do you view this problem and how best can it be solved ?

Ans :  I strongly condemn any type of extremism.Modern world should have no space for extremism.People must be motivated to think for better life, creating opportunity for themselves  or the society. All the forums and political parties in Tripura must come together on this issue and identify this problem as social problem.Any problem between Adivasis and Bengalis needs to be discussed openly and solved mutually. To my opinion, thinking of co-existence and mutual trust by both Adivasis and Bengalis can solve the extremist problem.

Qus :The relationship between the tribal and non-tribal communities in Tripura has been a matter of serious concern over the past many years. How can the relationship  improve so that both sections of the people can peacefully co-exist?

Ans :   Communism always isolates a nation or a section of people from other nation or other section of people. For example, before USSR broke away the rest of the world was not fully aware of the realities in the republic ..Now,it is very open and people know about them.Communist movement in Tripura obviously separated Adivasis and Bengalis in two compartments  and this has created a big gap between the two communities.Modern communist leaders in the state have to help anti left parties to bring better communal harmony in the state.

Qus : As a young representative of the people how do you view the current political perception and outlook of the younger generation of tribals? What do they feel about politics and socio-economic problems of Tripura ?  How are you trying to influence their thinking as a political leader and MLA?

Ans : Younger generations (Adivasis & Bengalis) of Tripura are in frustration as job opportunity has come to a saturation point.Present state govt.is finding  it difficult to manage the youth as they have no plan  or state aided effective schemes for the youth.I am presenting my future package wherever I go for the youths in the field of Technology,Agriculture,Medical Services etc where lots of job generation is possible .Moreover I am emphasizing on implementation of  the projects above all political motivations because political theories at times can hamper industria lization process.I appeal to the youth of the state to join hands in this initiative.
