Chess
in Tripura
All Tripura Chess Association (ATCA) was formed in 1974 through the
interest of some beginners. In 1975 it got affiliation of AICF. It
has seven sub-divisional chess associations and chess clubs as
affiliates. ATCA organized successfully 20 th National ‘B’ Chess
Championship in 1982 and National ‘A’ Chess Championship in 1985
at Agartala. Tripura had also the privilege of organizing All India
Audit and Accounts Chess Championship in 1989. Tripura can boast of
a National Sub-Junior Chess Champion Prasenjit Datta who represented
India in World Chess Championship (under 16 years) in 1995 at Brazil
– a rare achievements and honour for Tripura.
Tripura
has till now only two International rated chess players –
Prasenjit Datta (U-19 years) and Umasankar Datta (U-27 years).
Due
to geographical conditions and economic weakness of the stars baring
one or two chess players out of about 200 registered chess players
of Tripura can hardly participate in tournaments out side the state.
