The
Tennis, which is played on Table, is known as Table Tennis and the
Tennis, which is played on lawn, is known as lawn tennis.
At the origin it was most probably started on dining table in indoor
hall and then it was come out to outdoor on lawn as lawn tennis and
after that again it was come in indoor on table.
The
originating name of Table Tennis was PING PONG and it was played on
dining type table with the help of wooden racket of without specific
shape and cork ball.
Originally it was started in London but according to some sports
innovators of Australia, it was played in that Island in the last
decade of eighteenth century. Again
some sports innovators of America claimed that it was played in
their country in the name of WHIFT – WHAFT.
However
officially it was much played in London and ultimately the English
sports lovers and ping-pong players formed ‘PING PONG’
Association in England in the year 1902. It was not functioned
properly for several years. So for two decades the development of
the Ping Pong was remain unchanged. During this time it was used
only as fashionable game or to kill leisure time or to enjoy or to
get relaxed.
In
1920-21 the sports innovators of Ping Pong Association discovered
that the ‘Ping Pong” was a registered trade name and it could
not by used for public sports organization. So Ping Pong Association
was dissolved and reformed under the title of TABLE TENNIS
ASSOCIATION and the havoc change in the character of the game was
also brought.
By
these time sports innovators Mr. Goods replaced cork balls into
hollow colloid balls and Mr. Gibbs used studded rubber surface as
against the wooden stuff. These changes transformed the game from
dinning table to defense and attack with good graceful and rhythmic
movements. So the game achieved athletic indoor sport.
After
that there were no time to look back. Day by day the popularities
were increased from one club to another club and one country to
another country. In January 1926 Dr. Grorgy Lehman of Garmaby in
Barlin initiated a meeting for the development of Table Tennis where
INTERNATIONAL TABLE TENNIS FEDERATION were formed. But the first
Congress including the first general meeting of the Federation
shaping the rules took place in London in the following December.
Australia, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, England, Germany,
Hungary, India, Sweden and Wales were the founder members. Honorable
Mr. Ivor Montagu was the founder President of the Federation and
Head quarter at London. Mr. A H and A A Fyzee was the representative
in the congress on the party of India. They were practicing on medicine in London. The first world
Table Tennis championship was also held in London soon after the
congress. Where 52 Men and 14 women from seven nations were
participated and all but one of the titles went to Hungary.
Gradually
the popularities were increased and especially it spread over the
world by the English businessmen and sports lovers. But according to
Honorable Ivor Montagu, Founder President of the Federation,
‘Nandas’ Berlin visit and winning of German Championship in 1925
without losing a single game was really the beginning of
International Table Tennis. Mr. P N Nanda was an Indian, resident in
London.
During
the period of Second World War, the office of International Table
Tennis Federation was completely damaged by bombs etc. and the
revival of these losses was possible only through the Ted Cross and
war charities. In 1952, the Asian Table tennis Federation was
founded and Asian Table Tennis Championship was started. After that
gradually and linearly the popularities of the game was increasing
whole over the world. At present near about 300 countries are
playing Table Tennis and it is included in the Commonwealth and
Olympic championship besides the world championship.
