It
is completely depend upon the philosophy of the coach. The first
question one need to ask himself is ‘How do you plan to have your team
play. Each coach has his own philosophy about what system of play is
most affected; each has his own theories about shooting, pivoting
cutting dribbling, guarding, offensive and defensive patterns. Coach
uses a definite system regardless of materials and adopts the materials
to the system.
The
second question is ‘ How do you except to carry out your plan’? The
answer to this question involves, first the overall philosophy of the
coach with respect to practice and preparing a team for a system to
play. There are those who devote most of. There tune throughout the
session to scrimmage. Their teaching consists of interrupting play from
time to time to direct the movements of the player, The scrimmage is
used as a means of conditioning of selecting players and of developing
offense and defense in lieu of fundamental drills, other coach’s use
scrimmage only as a means of coordinating team movements.
There
are those who spend most of their on fundamental drills, they work
toward the perfection of the individual.
So,
prior to the practice the coach should determined exactly whom he
expects to prepare his team for competition and then follow that plan.
The coach should planned his programme of practice for the trainees as (i)
It will helps the coach to run his programme smoothly (ii) This also
helps the players to know, what are the things to be done in the
practice session, the coach should maintain the diary, so that he can
find out the deficiency of players, before planning his second programme
of practice.
The
coach is the house builder, the players, the materials and the
opposition. The strength of the team is entirely dependant on, what
materials it is made of right kind will provide the protection required
against the opposition. The materials are the best there is, but the
builder must provide the mortan for the bricks. The coach’s mortan is
sound fundamentals & good team strategy.
Ideally,
the team is drawn from a squad of some fifteen to twenty players
enabling the coach to pick the “best of the bunch” to suit the
particular requirements. Basketball is predominantly a tall man’s game
& there is undeniable a place for two or three players on the squad.
A
team needs height & fast mobility. If the coach can find twelve
tall, fast and mobile players, he will be a very lucky man. A small
player can often find a very useful place on a team. The player who has
developed speed & hustle combined with the unipeceable ball handling
and the ability to set up a play, cannot be denied a place on the team,
though he is not so height.
The
man with the special ability is included in the team for his special
function, the pivot the driver the cutter, the set shooter, the sound
defensive man and post player.
The
pivot, post and rebounder go together, these are all tall man, the
driver cutter and set shooter are generally small players. Ability is
not restricted to size though it may be that the tall players can move
fast & shoot set shot and conversely, the small man by virtue of his
positional play in blocking out, may be a top grade rebounder. The tall
or short comparison is merely a generally functional one.
