The Two Men Who Guarded My Sight: Dr Arun Singhvi and Dr Vikash Jain!!!

The first sting came in the dark, at an hour when even the most stubborn thoughts usually surrender to sleep. By 0300 hours, my eyes had become small chambers of ache—each blink a pulse, each attempt to focus a dissolving of the world into trembling silhouettes. The tearing came in waves, as though my eyes were trying to speak a language older than pain. By dawn, the haze had thickened into a warning I could no longer ignore.
Yet even in that blur, one truth remained sharp: the memory of two men whose hands had once restored clarity to my world—Dr Arun Singhvi and Dr Vikash Jain of ASG Eye Hospital, Jodhpur.
I had first walked into ASG in 2009, unaware that I was stepping not merely into a hospital but into a sanctuary of rare medical brilliance. ASG was then a modest institution, but its soul was immense—shaped by the vision of its founders. Today, ASG stands as one of India’s largest and most respected eye-care networks, with over 180 specialized hospitals across more than 95 cities, a testament to the leadership of Dr Arun Singhvi, its Co-founder, Chairman, and Managing Director .
Dr Singhvi is not merely an ophthalmic surgeon; he is a craftsman of sight. With over 50,000 cataract surgeries and more than 18,000 LASIK procedures to his name, he is regarded as one of India’s finest phaco and refractive surgeons . His training at AIIMS, New Delhi, and his FRCS qualification from the UK only hint at the depth of his mastery. What the world may not know is the quiet nobility behind the surgeon—the man who once operated on my eyes free of cost, and then, with a gesture as elegant as his surgical precision, gifted me a Sailor fountain pen. A pen he himself prefers over all others. A pen that today would cost no less than ₹50,000. A pen that, to me, became a symbol of his grace.
And then there is Dr Vikash Jain—another luminary of ASG, trained at AIIMS, and now a world-renowned ophthalmologist specializing in phaco, medical retina, squint, and cornea treatments. Though ASG has grown into a vast network, Dr Vikash has never allowed success to dilute his humanity. I had not met him since 2009, yet at 0500 hours today, when my eyes were drowning in pain and uncertainty, I reached out to him hesitantly on WhatsApp.
By 0530 hours, he called.
Not a message. Not a delayed response. A call—at dawn—from a man who now oversees a medical empire but still remembers a patient from seventeen years ago. He advised medication, yes, but more importantly, he urged me to rush to Sharp Sight Eye Clinic without delay. That urgency, that instinct to protect, is the mark of a true healer.
Sharp Sight in Agartala is no ordinary clinic. It is home to Dr Mimansaa Agasti, a distinguished retina and uvea specialist with over 11 years of experience, trained at the world-renowned Aravind Eye Hospital and KGMU Lucknow . Her expertise in complex retinal disorders and her reputation for empathetic, precise care make her one of the finest ophthalmologists in the region. I will be heading there at 0930 hours, carrying both hope and gratitude.
I had once urged the Government of Tripura to invite ASG to open a branch here. But like a sun-dunned ostrich, it remains silent—head buried, vision absent. Yet this is not a story about institutional apathy. It is about the opposite: the magnanimity of two doctors who embody what medicine was always meant to be.
Dr Singhvi and Dr Vikash are not just surgeons; they are custodians of sight, guardians of human dignity. Their brilliance is matched only by their compassion. In a world where memory fades quickly and relationships often dissolve into transactional exchanges, they have shown that true care does not forget.
A doctor in need is a doctor indeed—but a doctor who remembers you in your hour of need is something rarer still. It is a blessing.
As I prepare to step into Sharp Sight this morning, my vision may be blurred, but one thing remains crystal clear: the light that Dr Singhvi and Dr Vikash carry within them has never once looked away.
