The Flag-Keeper of Ranibari: A Father’s Devotion That Carries the Spirit of India

In the quiet green expanse of
Ranibari Gram Panchayat, under Kadamtala RD Block in North Tripura, where
endless rows of tea gardens stretch across the land and hundreds of workers
live humble lives, a deeply moving story unfolds, one that reflects the soul of
India.
At the heart of this story is
Rasaraj Malakar, a simple tea garden worker. He may not possess wealth or
status, but he carries something far greater, unshakable faith, boundless
devotion, and the enduring love of a father.
Years ago, tragedy struck his
life. He lost his young son, Damodar, to illness. The pain of that loss never
faded. It remained with him, quietly shaping his life and emotions. But in
2014, when Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India, something
extraordinary happened.
Hearing the Prime Minister’s full
name, Narendra Damodar Das Modi, touched a deeply personal chord within him.
The name 'Damodar' was not just a coincidence, for Rasaraj, it felt like
destiny. In that moment, he began to see a reflection of his lost son in the
nation’s leader, a connection born not of logic, but of love. From that day
onward, his life took a unique turn.
A Living Symbol of Faith in the
Tea Gardens:
In the middle of the tea garden
where he lives and works, Rasaraj erected three tall Indian national flags.
These flags are not mere pieces of cloth fluttering in the wind, these are the
symbols of his devotion, his memories, and his hope. For the past twelve years,
without fail, he has taken care of the flags.
Despite growing old, despite his
weakening body, and despite having very limited means, he personally clears the
surrounding bushes and maintains the area. His steps may have slowed with age,
but his spirit remains unbroken.Every day, these tricolours rise high above the
tea bushes, carrying with it a silent message of love, patriotism, and hope.
A Father’s Love Beyond
Understanding:
To many, his actions may seem
unusual. Some villagers even misunderstand him, labeling him unfairly. But deep
emotions often appear strange to those who have never experienced such profound
loss and devotion.Rasaraj even styles his beard like Prime Minister Modi, not
as imitation, but as a heartfelt tribute. For him, it is a way to keep his son
alive in his memories, to feel close to a presence he believes carries a part
of his child. This is not mere admiration. This is a father’s way of healing.
Hope That Still Flies High:
Even today, Rasaraj lives with a
simple yet powerful hope, that one day, either the Prime Minister or the Chief
Minister Dr Manik Saha of Tripura will notice the flags standing tall in the
tea garden and come to meet him.He dreams that perhaps one day, a helicopter
will descend into his village, and he will finally meet the leader in whom he
sees the reflection of his beloved son.Until that day arrives, he continues his
daily ritual, quietly, faithfully, without expectation of reward.
A Story Discovered in the Field:
This remarkable story might have
remained hidden among the tea bushes, had it not been noticed by Utpal Das, the
Block Development Officer of Kadamtala.During his recent field visits to
understand the ground realities of tea garden workers, he came across Rasaraj.
What he discovered was not just a labourer, but a living example of devotion
and humanity.Where others saw an ordinary man, he saw something extraordinary,
a story that deserves to be heard far beyond the boundaries of Ranibari.
A Message to the Nation:
In a world often driven by
material success, the life of Rasaraj Malakar reminds us of timeless truths:
devotion does not require
wealth.Love does not seek recognition. And the most powerful stories are often
born in the quietest corners of our country.
His story is not just about
personal grief, it is about how faith, patriotism, and love can come together
to create something profoundly human.
As the tricolour continues to flutter
proudly above the tea gardens of North Tripura, an elderly father continues his
silent vigil, tired in body, yet unwavering in spirit.Perhaps, one day, this
story will reach the highest offices of the nation. And
perhaps, on that day, a father’s long wait will finally come to an end.
